Hey guys,
As you know, we have a modified schedule this week. Our Wednesday class will be held on Thursday, so we can celebrate American Thanksgiving that afternoon. Here is your homework for this week to help you plan ahead: Thursday
Friday
Monday
Thanks to Chika for reminding me to post this!
Your homework is to write a brief blog post entry on unauthorized (illegal) immigration in the United States. Please re-read the section on “immigration concerns in the United States” on pg. 101 in your textbook. Also research polling data from www.gallup.com, www.pewresearch.org, and other credible sources you can find online (news sources that cite polling data can be very useful, for example). Your purpose in doing this research is to check whether the information in the textbook can be confirmed by recent public opinion polling data, or whether the text needs updating (I suspect it does...) Having confirmed or dis-confirmed the information in the course text, you will write a short blog post that summarizes immigration concerns in the US using the main categories/headings in the text. We have analyzed and discussed a great deal of course content in the last couple of weeks. Prior to your Unit Test on Wednesday, your task is to write an blog post that responds to the unit's Essential Questions. This post, of course, must be argumentative and evidence-based. It must include concepts and data from both the textbook and the Human Migration PPT.
Here are the EQs:
Again, this post is due on Tuesday, November 25. The Unit Test on all of the content from Chapter 3, the two quizzes, and the PPT is on Thursday, November 27. The schedules for Wednesday and Thursday have been switched due to American Thanksgiving. I have agreed to extend the deadline for your first essay draft to Friday, November 28. I have agreed to extend the deadline for your first essay draft to Friday, November 28. Hey guys, your homework is to use your notes from our lecture and discussion in class, as well as to do some online research, to answer the following Essential Question in a short blog post:
Below are your paper deadlines, for your reference. Of course, the assignment sheet can still be found on Google Drive.
Our next Socratic Seminar, which will be held next Monday, will be on the broad, highly complex topic of human migration. This topic involves a wide array of issues, some very positive, some unbelievably negative. I have tried to gather sources for your analysis that uncover many of these dynamics. In class, we will watch two Ted Talks, one of international migrants and remittances, and one on human trafficking. You must also read/view, take notes on, and develop arguments and questions in relation to the following:
The emphasis is on reaching deep understanding through critically comparing and contrasting the different topics and perspectives, synthesizing information, creating reasoned, evidence-based arguments, and developing effective questions (minimum of 5) for seminar discussion. Your Thinking Moves organizer must be submitted in Google Drive before class on Monday. You must bring to class a set of detailed notes, including your main arguments and questions for discussion. Refer again to the Socratic Seminar Rubric (below) and re-read your previous feedback so you can focus on what do to well on again and/or improve on this time around.
