To deepen our examination of religion as a cause and contributor to territorial conflict, you will investigate, think critically, and inform an audience about what is arguably the most important and intractable conflict in the world, the Israel-Palestine conflict. More precisely, you will be creating your next visual project.
For those who were absent today, you missed a very important discussion and analysis of some of this conflicts roots, key events, and ongoing problems related to the Israel-Palestine situation and its spillover effects globally. Please refer to the PPT on Google Drive, and let me remind you that the World History Encyclopedia remains a great source that is also available on Google Drive (it has been moved to "Course Readings").
To structure your inquiry, begin by choosing one of the following Essential Questions:
Alone or with a partner, you must provide detailed, evidence-based explanations of all of the checklisted expectations below, and structure your explanation to persuasively answer your chosen EQ. Your explanations and evaluation should be thorough enough that someone unfamiliar with the topic will be able to understand them. You will be assessed using the Visual Project Rubric (on Google Drive)
If you choose EQ(a), to answer it well you need to investigate and effectively explain how geography has shaped the conflict in terms of:
If you choose EQ(b), you must meet all of the expectations above while also adding an additional layer of complexity that will require you to engage in more rigorous critical thinking. The "to what extent" segment of the question implies a comparison to other factors. Thus, you need to critically compare and contrast the degree to which geography as opposed to other key factors shaped the Arab-Israeli conflict. Please refer to the PPT on Google Drive, and let me remind you that the World History Encyclopedia remains a great source that is also available on Google Drive (it has been moved to "Course Readings").
To structure your inquiry, begin by choosing one of the following Essential Questions:
- (a) How has geography shaped the Arab-Israeli conflict? (easier)
- (b) To what extent has geography shaped the Arab-Israeli conflict? (advanced)
- Historical significance of holy sites
- Causes of the ongoing conflict
- Main events in the conflict (historical overview)
- How territory has shifted over the course of the conflict
- How natural and artificial territorial barriers impede resolution of the conflict (Israeli settlements, Israel’s border walls)
You may choose which other factor(s) you believe to be salient, such as:
- ideology, regional or global politics, US hegemony, the Cold War, etc.
