Today we did a lot of thinking and quite a lot of thinking about thinking, which is known as meta-cognition. We co-constructed criteria for limited and effective thinking and then used the criteria to analyze and evaluate the thinking evidenced in two of your blog posts on sustainability.
Here are a couple pics of our lists. How could the evidence of limited and effective thinking we found in the blog posts be used to enhance the master lists?

Next, we examined "thinking moves," essential thinking steps in the the process of moving from surface level understanding to deep understanding. Here is the matrix (available on Google Drive, of course):
Your homework is to use the graphic organizer to record evidence of your own "thinking moves" as you examine, compare and contrast, and develop arguments related to this week's Socratic Seminar readings. In other words, I'm forcing you to think meta-cognitively--to think carefully about your thinking--so we can move towards developing deeper conceptual understanding and advanced argumentative and discussion skills.
Specifically, you need to do the following for Friday:
Read, annotate, take notes on, and go through the thinking moves for the following readings. Record evidence of having gone through each of the thinking moves on the graphic organizer. This needs to be done recursively, that is over and over, as you go through each one and discern connections between them. During and/or afterwards, your are also responsible for creating at least five higher-order thinking questions to drive discussion.
We will be practicing going through the thinking moves tomorrow by reading and analyzing one of the articles in class. This will also have the effect of reducing your workload! We will also discuss how to construct effective questions again.
